    and we've put ourselves in the same category.  El Salvador and Honduras went to war over a soccer game.  Britain and Spain fought a 9-year war over Jenkins' ear.

    Of course, these casus belli conceal deeper, more fundamental reasons for the nations to be at war.  But I suspect at this point the US is not immune on that ground.  What does make us somewhat immune is the world's largest nuclear arsenal, which to date we remain the only nation to actually use.  (Our lecturing other nations that they are not even allowed to have a nuclear arsenal comes off pretty hollow and hypocritical when that fact is kept in mind.)

    The sad fact is that if our friends and allies had had the guts to start reeling us back in 15 years ago, we probably could have foregone the ugliness that will come now.  But we had them cowed, groveling on their bellies before mighty USA USA USA, just the way we liked it, making it impossible for them to be real partners to us.  We will pay the price, regardless of how many foreign cities we nuke to maintain our posture, and the denial that there is anything wrong with our global behavior.
