transhumanist science fiction becoming more popular?  After all, if people are getting used to the idea of being able to change gender at will or even swap bodies then that would naturally lead to more acceptance of transpeople today.  For a good example, see The Culture series by the late Iain Banks where almost everyone can transition simply by willing it to be so and waiting a month for the physical changes to fully take effect.

Which came first? Is growing awareness due to such SciFi explorations? Or is SciFi exploring gender issues due to growing awareness of the complexity? Or, more likely, feeding each other.

actually take on more stress points (in addition to those brought on by remembering your death or even knowing you were restored from backup, depending on whether a cortical stack or earlier remote backup is used) and it is harder to adapt if your morph (body) has a gender (which includes neuter as it would be with a synthetic/robotic one) that is different from your gender identity.  Oh, and as the technology is less than a century old in the Eclipse Phase setting gender identity is not changeable in that setting.
