  •  Back when I was a young and frisky lass, my (11+ / 0-)

high school taught Biology.  After much note taking and paying attention in class and other studious activity, I wondered what the hell frogs and worms had to do with my reproductive self.  After all, worms and frogs wanted to make lots of little worms and frogs, and I most certainly did not want to make any little anythings!!

I hightailed my young ass down to Planned Parenthood and asked the nice people to tell me everything I needed to know to keep my young (Catholic) ass healthy and pregnancy free, should it ever come to that.

Goddess bless them!!  They did, starting with a complete exam and a candid (read: loaded with facty stuff) discussion about when I thought I might need birth control and what kind would be best for me.  I do not recall the word abstinence being used.  More like, "When in doubt, don't!"

I did not leave the PP offices and have an overwhelming desire for much of anything.  They had given me so much to think about in terms of my own attitudes toward sex and when and with whom I might consider it.  I settled for going home and having dinner before tackling a pile of homework.

The time did present itself when I knew I was going to enter into a sexual relationship.  I was well informed, prepared (medically speaking...nothing can really prepare you for the intensity of the emotional journey) and very sure that said relationship would not result in an unwanted pregnancy.

All because I had the best medical care and information available.  All because of the wonderful health care people at Planned Parenthood.

I am only one of millions of young women from every background imaginable in this country who have had the benefit of the caring of Planned Parenthood.

That rabidly rightwing jackass in Texas should be on his knees, thanking whatever god he thinks made him that PP exists to help young people start out their sexual lives in healthy ways, and that older couples can rely on them for family planning and women's health.

Because Goddess knows, left to the tender mercies of assholes like him, we are doomed.

    •  wish you'd make a video of this... (5+ / 0-)

comment/experience, send a copy to the Representative, and to Wendy, and to TX planned parenthoods, so they could use it in their lobbying and educational effort.

You speak with more authority than someone one the inside - it's your experience, and a powerful one at that.

      It would be so helpful.

I can imagine you might not want your face visible/recognizable ... if so, I'm sure there's someone who knows videos that could help you with that.

Your first person account could make a big difference to this educational effort.

N.B. I'm not with PP, but have done advocacy for teen pregnancy prevention programs, and recognize convincing authenticity..

Not sure about being able to do a video, for several reasons....

I'm willing to  do a print version, though, if it keeps even one other woman safe, healthy, and sane.

        Thanks for the idea!
