Grant was an excellent general who always put the most qualified men in charge.  There was a lot of corruption (political) after the civil war so many hoped this practice would continue when he got into the White House. As it turned out, many of the people he put in positions of power were corrupt.  Very.  Once he left office, Grant put his name on the letterhead of a brokerage firm that swindled all of its clients (including Grant) out of all their $.  Kind of sad.  He wrote a memoir at the very end of his life that earned big bucks, though.
