ed in the heads of the people and therefore easier to overthrow. It is easier to get from a secular dictatorship to democracy than from a theocracy. The theocracy has a much deeper hold on the minds of their populace, threatening them with hellfire etc.

Anything, which dislodges them from power, has the benefit of doubt in my book.

    •  Basic reality check about religion in Egypt (5+ / 0-)

Something I learned first hand: most people in Egypt are deeply religious and revere Islam.

If there's any kind of democracy in the future of Egypt there will be without a doubt a significant islamist presence in it. If not an outright majority, then a veto-wielding minority.

There was a reason even the secular military coup leader had to put the Imam from Al-Azahar right behind him as he read his statement.

We may wish for all kinds of things in our heads: but that's reality.

      •  You seem to misunderstand the term 'secular' (1+ / 0-)

It does not mean 'without religion'. You can be deeply religious and still not want religion to rule the state. The Islamists want us to forget that distinction, interesting that you help them.

        •  No, actually, I didn't (4+ / 0-)

You are the one who implied "theocracy" which means a form of government ruled by religion and does not apply to how Muslim Brotherhood came to power, or frankly what it had done since it came to power.

If there are free, and fair, regular elections, it's not a theocracy. Period.

Please tell us what part of the constitution that you say Morsi "pushed through" got rid of elections? If you can't then, what is the problem on waiting for regularly scheduled elections instead of resorting to military force to remove someone you don't like?

Denoting attitudes, activities, or other things that have no religious or spiritual basis: "secular buildings".

I guess you can make up words if you want to, but it is not the way that most people understand that word.

        •  You do know, don't you, that the leadership (0+ / 0-)

of the secular opposition have all supported the maintenance, in one form or another, of Shari'a in the Egyptian Constitution?

People really need to stop throwing around words and concepts they don't understand, particularly when those words and concepts have been so deeply inflected by Fear, Inc.
