  •  No ground squirrels in Georgia (10+ / 0-)

    just Eastern Chipmunks and Groundhogs.

The only other ground dwelling squirrels east of the Mississippi are: Least Chipmunk, Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel, and Franklin's Ground Squirrel.  All of which occur in the northern midwest/Great Lakes region.

The 13-lined is a small, striped ground squirrel and is the most widespread of the species mentioned above (in the U.S.).  However it doesn't look very chipmunk-like.  It has very small ears giving its head a very different profile.  It has a lot more stripes, the stripes lack black borders, and there are rows of spots between the strips.

Other than the Golden-mantled the other ground squirrels that resemble chipmunks are the several species of antelope ground squirrels.  These are small with small ears and live in arid, sparsely vegetated areas in the west.
