We've been doing this since the founding. That is, enlisting the help of the media to win the public over. You know, Jefferson and the National Gazette trying to prevent the nationalization of the US economy and financial system, "Remember the Maine", "Kill the Japs", and so on. So many crappy rah rah B movies released during WWII trying to keep the public motivated. And so on.

The thing is, we're not at war right now (and have not been since the end of the Cold War, whatever we tell ourselves). Some lunatics got lucky 12 years ago because "homeland security" was asleep at the wheel, not because there was this overwhelming menace requiring hundreds of billions of dollars in spending and the violation of much of the constitution to defeat.

And to avoid any chance that too many Americans would realize that, Hollywood was enlisted, once again, to keep the masses placated.
