The Republican leadership's concept of compromise -- a key component of any meaningful negotiation -- is for the opposition to discard their own beliefs and completely embrace the conservative point of view. Their notion of negotiation involves capitulation by the opposition.

The source of this unwillingness to find middle ground are the tea party-affiliated Republicans in Congress who firmly regard any willingness to compromise to be a character flaw.

Much to the detriment of Congress, the GOP continues to foolishly embrace the often naive, frequently irrational, usually hyperbolic rhetoric of tea party pundits.
These extreme dogmatists have been behaving like a deranged, estranged spouse who -- rather than lose the house, investments, and parental control of the kids in a divorce settlement -- decides to burn down the house with the spouse and kids inside.
