who's function is spying, that would make him a spymaster.
Having worked both as a contractor to and directly for the worlds foremost spy agency, he qualifies as a spy.

I don't see a guy working on an info system as a spy.  A spy is someone who actually gathers the data or goes to other countries to spy on someone. And he wasn't an analyst.  He probably should not have even been looking at the data but it is very hard to hide something from the system admin.

Granted with todays info gathering techniques the distinction is small at times.  The whole meme that Snowden is a spy is a smear intended to minimize the data he released in my opinion.  Just another demonize the source action.

Snowden is irrelevant.  What he exposed is relevant.

      •  Why would it be a smear? (0+ / 0-)

I would think if he was a spy, which you are correct - he wasn't, would give him more legitimacy, not less.

      •  So, the people gathering data on you (3+ / 0-)

with their mining operations aren't spying on you? Only the James Bond types are spies?
I guess that absolves 99% of our intel infrastructure since most of the employees of all of the agencies are desk jockeys manipulating databases one way or another.

        •  yes they are spying on me.... (0+ / 0-)

...but they are not spies in the loaded sense of the word.  You know there is more to calling Snowden a 'spy' than just the word.

It is my opinion that the image of a spy as the guy  who lies about his identity and does hidden things etc is an attempt to invalidate or cast doubt on the information Snowden released or the motive for releasing it.

          •  No, that's a PR guy (0+ / 0-)

Do you get all your information about Intel from spy thriller movies?
Secret Agent Man is the smallest fraction of the Intel apparatus, the vast majority are just like Snowden. And the Secret Agent types are not interested in you or me or any other small fry. The people most likely to riffle through your file are Sysops or even lower, algorithms.
And the people MOST likely to mine your data are not connected with NSA or government spying at all, they work for online advertizing agencies and "research firms".
And you are just a product to them.
Sorry, your romantic vision of swashbuckling spies is way out of date.

...but that is point of my comments.  They are using that movie/TV image of a spy to impugn Snowden when they call him a spy.  Part of the 'damn the messenger' strategy to invalidate the message.
