  •  There is a lot of coal in MT I believe (12+ / 0-)

I dont think any Dem, or any politician, is going to win there on an anti-coal platform.

To quote Wikipedia, which of course is always correct, "The [Powder River Basin] region supplies about 40 percent of coal in the United States."

Not supporting coal in Montana would be worse than comments about legitimate rape.

Steal a trillion, too big to fail. Steal a thousand, go to jail.

    •  Coal is a dying industry. (2+ / 0-)

The best thing a leader can do is to point out that new industries must replace coal wherever the people are dependent on coal for jobs. Coal is one of the foremost environmental threats, and our very lives are at stake. To me, it's not just one of many issues, it is THE issue.

coal.  Repubs would like tom sell the idea that Obama is killing coal.  Dueling polluters are going head to head and coal is being handed its ass by natural gas.  Truth is that the "free market" that the cons so love is dealing the death blow to coal.

      •  You've never lived in Montana. (0+ / 0-)

It's very easy to say leaders should point out new industries, but Montana is one of the most traditional states in the nation. Think of it as the western equivalent of E. Virginia and you have the picture.

The Intermountain West is still in many ways the last stronghold of the 19th century. Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, and Utah are all changing, but all these states cherish their old-west traditions and will continue to do so for a long time to come.

This applies to conservatives and liberals alike out here.

Right many are called, and damn few are chosen.
