  •  Recommended Book: Achilles in Vietnam (4.00)
The book Achilles in Vietnam, by Jonathan Shay draws upon ancent literature and recent history to deliver a message relevant to the present day. Shay is a VA psychiatrist who has worked with returning veterans. While he is most particuarly interested in understanding, healing, and preventing post-traumatic stress, his book helped me understand the combat experience in general. It also helped me understand why Vietnam was a particularly wounding war.

The first chapter of the book is entitled Betrayal of What's Right, and it this is the opening sentence: "We begin in the moral world of the soldier -- what his culture understands to be right -- and betrayal of that moral order by a commander."

I recommend this book to anyone who has served in combat or cares about someone who has served in combat.
