One of my first night shifts as an RN, I checked on all my patients with the nurse who would be covering while I was at lunch. One gentleman was late-60's, staying overnight for observation after having chest pain that afternoon. Vitals stable, labs OK, resting comfortably.

I came back from the cafeteria to find him in a full code, with a dozen people in the room. He'd already turned gray by the time I got close enough to see him. I wound up comforting his roommate and getting him set up in a private room, poor man was terrified. One minute I was bringing him a turkey sandwich and talking football, the next we were prepping his corneas for donation. Obviously, it's etched in my memory :(

They did an autopsy and he had other underlying conditions. There was nothing we as nurses could have done to prevent his passing.

Thanks for sharing your story. Sorry this happened to you. There's nothing wrong with having a strong, even life-altering, reaction to what you've just witnessed. It just means you're human!
