Chavez came into power itching for a fight with the U.S.  He went out of his way as much as possible to position himself as the next Fidel, battling against the big, bad U.S.  He got exactly what he wanted.

Cynicism is what passes for insight among the mediocre.

      If it's
      Not your body,
      Then it's
      Not your choice
      And it's
      None of your damn business!

      •  All I know is that Chavez and W got into (0+ / 0-)

diplomatic spats.  And Chavez aligned himself with Kim Junk Il and Ahmadinejad, even praising Iran's crackdown of the protests after their election in 2009.  But I think he only aligned himself with those regimes because "enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap, rather than actually agreeing with them on any particular issues.

After Obama came into office, the diplomatic spats settled down a bit, though Chavez made an ass of himself by accusing the US of imperialism for US efforts to assist Haiti after their earthquake.
