  •  I haven't drunk Sam Adams beer (10+ / 0-)

since I noticed that they had trademarked "The best beer in America".  Not particularly bad beer, but hardly the best in America, and I don't approve of egregious advertising.

Being a native of Oregon, I would say that yes, there are a lot of beers from outside the state that are worth drinking.  Which ones depend on the local water, among other things.

    •  Sam Adam's not bad (5+ / 0-)

and if there's nothing else on tap I'll drink it. But anytime I'm in a new place, I try to sample some of the local stuff.

I was out in DC about 10 years ago, doing something for the NSF. We had someone at the table who'd shown off his Alabama Homebrew Judging certification. Next round, he ordered a Sam Adams, I ordered a Sierra Nevada. The waitstaff switched them and I was the one who noticed and had to convince him. (Really - a lager vs. the classic West Coast pale ale? Hallertauer/Tettnang vs. Cascade hops?)

I reached inside my wallet, threw my Wisconsin drivers license on the table, and said "This trumps your Alabama Homebrew card".
