  •  Thanks, rugbymom. (10+ / 0-)

Here's a pic of our loops, which are a whole lot gnarlier than it looks like in Canada. But the degree of grade ought to be very similar given the limitations on locomotive power. That hard turn at the 'bottom' would have significantly slowed runaway engines, so as to stop them right where it appears in the diary's map...

OFLoops place is in the middle of that top loop. §;o)

I think you mean without the drag of the following cars, if they were following or in front of the engine's progress, either way, I am still unclear on thst issue.

And these engines cg would be way different than the tank cars, much lower I would guess, so they could stay on a turn the cars may tip on

If drag and not weight is determining the accelerations rates here, the engine would pick up speed and inertia from not having as much drag after detaching, however that was done, you're suggestion they can tip out of the coupler is interesting: maybe, maybe not.

However the engine would not speed up unless it had been being retarded by the friction of the attached: following or leading cars.
In other words, the instant the cars detached the engine(s) have the inertia dog gave it at that moment whatever happened before that moment. After that drag, air and rolling friction working against gravity controls accerleration + or -...but hopefully not having the engines engaged too....cause that would be really bad...

I am still unclear whether the engines are in front leading the cars thru the town earlier and uphill, as reported, or maybe there was a pusher at the back, and this is the engine pictured, then the rest of the engines may still be in the yard?
Dam, the amount of bullshit in this incident is amazing, and it's not google translating it wrong either.

I will read on...hopefully all will be 'splained.

This really shouldn't be this hard.

      This machine kills Fascists.
