    as probably everyone is sick of me saying by now.

    It's definitely affordable, especially outside of Panama City. If you have the average SS ($1200) you could live quite decently. If you have say, $3000 a month, you could live really well, like on a beautiful beach or in the mountains with golf course and a maid.

    It helps to know Spanish, but you can get by with a few words and some help.

    I'll tell you up front, I'm fluent in Spanish, my wife is a licensed translator, her nephew and his wife are lawyers, (including immigration), her son is a dentist, etc. So, I've not had a bad time here. At the same time, I run into pretty clueless Americans all the time, who seem to be making it somehow.

    Check this resort/golf/residences in Boquete.  I went there to buy a couch I saw on Craigslist. I haven't that kind of money, but it's a really nice place, and if you could afford a nice time in the US, it would probably be a bargain.
