term. Globally, populism is a very ugly and divisive from of politics. It is 'us' vs 'them' and the 'us' always perceives itself as a victim of the 'them'.

Sarah Palin is a populist in the finest global tradition of the word. Robert Mugabe is a populist. Nazis espoused populist beliefs. Mussolini was a populist.

Get two populists fighting against each other in an election and watch any hope of unity disintegrate.

    •  FDR was a Progressive Populist...THAT term is NOT (1+ / 0-)

      "ugly."

Robber Baron "ReTHUGisms": John D. Rockefeller -"The way to make money is to buy when blood is running in the streets"; Jay Gould -"I can hire one half of the working class to kill the other half."

the term used to have a different connotation in America.

George Wallace was also a populist and so was Huey Long. The Tea Party is a populist movement. In Europe, populism is the domain of the radical right. In Africa, it is the domain of the radical left.

I understand the way the majority on this thread view it. Having lived in a heavily populist democracy for the last 15 years, I view it very differently.
