we have had a number of AG's run for governor, some successfully -  eg Gerald Baililes, McDonnell - but it is not guaranteed -  eg Marshall Coleman, Mary Sue Terry.  We have a Lt. Gov, but it has not always been a sure path to the state mansion.  Among those who have been successful were Mills Godwin, John Dalton, Chuck Robb, Doug Wilder, and Tim Kaine.  Among those not successful, including in some cases not even getting the nomination, wereHenry Howell, Don Beyer, Dick Davis, and John Hager.  The current Lt. Gov., now in his 2nd term in that office, wanted to run for Governor.  Last time he stood down to avoid having a divisive primary with McDonnell.  This time once it was decided it would be a convention, Bill Bolling knew he could not win Republican nomination, whereas in a primary he would have easily beaten Cooch, because in Virginia we do not register by party and any voter can choose in which party's primary he wants to participate.
