  •  Karen Armstrong! (4+ / 0-)

I've been thinking about her "Battle For God" a lot lately when watching the antics of the religious right.

Anyone trying to gain a better understanding of what is happening today (both in the US and internationally) and how it has played out in history should definitely pick it up. Be sure to read with a highlighter though - very dense/heavy stuff.

Being part of a reading group that digests her stuff would be ideal, if you can manage that.

I've noticed a snotty backlash to Karen Armstrong, in this venue and elsewhere. From the emotional tone of the "disagreement" with her scholarly work and conclusions, I suspect a lot of resistance to her is basically sexist in character. You know, reasoned disagreement is one thing; attitude is quite another.

Some people hate the idea of accomplished, prominent, successful women. A lot of "historians," and "history" buffs, and those who have, uh, tried to make it :) as academic historians, fall into this category.

It's here they got the range/ and the machinery for change/ and it's here they got the spiritual thirst. --Leonard Cohen

I've read several of her books and each conclusion is backed by virtual mountains of supporting evidence. And she is a particularly unemotional writer even when compared to other religious historians.

I think I'm going to go dig Battle For God out of storage for a reread :-)
