    Former Credit Suisse Managing Director Pleads Guilty in Connection with Scheme to Hide Losses in Mortgage-backed Securities Trading Book

    Kareem Serageldin, the former Managing Director/Global Head of Structured Credit in the Investment Banking Division of Credit Suisse Group pleaded guilty today, announced U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara. Serageldin was extradited from the United Kingdom on Friday, April 5, 2013, to face charges that he fraudulently inflated the prices of asset-backed bonds in Credit Suisse’s trading book in late 2007 and early 2008.

    CHICAGO—A U.S. citizen who allegedly operated a foreign currency trading fraud scheme while living in Panama—obtaining more than $25 million, with losses totaling at least $5 million, from some 400 investors nationwide, including Chicago, when the scheme collapsed in 2009—was extradited from Peru to face federal fraud charges in Chicago.

    Former Dallas Securities Broker Sentenced in Oklahoma to 84 Months in Prison for Role in Stock Manipulation Scheme

    Joshua Wayne Lankford, 39, of Dallas, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge James H. Payne in the Northern District of Oklahoma to serve 84 months in prison.

    Lankford was originally charged in a 24-count indictment unsealed on Feb. 10, 2009, against five defendants.  Prior to trial, Lankford fled to Costa Rica, where he remained until he was extradited to the United States in May 2012.

    Man Admits Mortgage Elimination Scam

    Aneal Maharaj, 64, a former resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, who fled to Fiji after being charged with defrauding victims of over $1.4 million in an investment fraud and marketing scheme, pleaded guilty to fraud and tax evasion charges.[...]

    Maharaj fled to Fiji and failed to appear at the hearing. In February 2009, the U.S. Department of Justice began extradition proceedings. Maharaj fought extradition for more than two years, but on Nov. 15, 2011, he was extradited to Las Vegas to face the charges.

    In December 2010, Chodan was extradited from the United Kingdom and subsequently pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate the FCPA and agreed to forfeit $726,885.
