  •  Recall a time when US did try to be tops in things (33+ / 0-)

that actually mattered.  At least lip service was paid to the concept of being best at education, infrastructure, and standard of living for average Americans.  Nobody even mentions infrastructure anymore, education is another potential profit center for politically connected entrepreneurs, and average Americans are supposed to shop at Wal-Mart and be distracted from their plight by watching Idol.

FDR at least tried w/ programs like the CCC, WPA, and PWA.  Nothing similar was ever even considered under the current presidency.  It's not complicated--if you have tens of millions un/underemployed, and you have an infrastructure deficit of $3.6 trillion, you put people to work building roads, bridges, sewers, and the like.  Sen. Paul Simon, a mentor of Obama's, wrote a book on this subject back when he ran for president.

I still don't understand why it was never even considered.

Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?

    •  Because Obama's corporate overlords opposed it. (16+ / 0-)

I say that only somewhat sarcastically. The Democratic Party is captured by moneyed interests now far more than they were back in FDR's day. There is no party of the workers, as there was back then. Bought and paid for.

Now we just need to figure out alternatives. Americans are not getting the redress they're asking for, and the two-party system is broken -- badly. We've got an authoritarian center-right party, and a neo-fascist radical far right party. Not much of a choice.

      •  We need an alternative soon (0+ / 0-)

It's actually quite scary. The wealthy have control of both parties, and both parties are ignoring a number of festering issues, along with the general decline of the middle class, while the media supports them in trying to divert us into focusing on various fake issues.  This is the kind of environment that invites a charismatic leader to come along, say a lot of fundamentally true things about a number of problems that the mainstream politicians ignore, and gain enough support from people saying "Finally, somebody who gets it!" to take power. Said leader will then gradually show himself for the fascist tyrant that our environment invites, and use all of the power accumulated by Bush and Obama to crush all opposition. Unless reasonable, moderate people do something soon to take control of the system, a dictatorship will be inevitable.
