      All lead to good things.

For example, my one grandmother did, indeed, turn into a child thief, to the point of trying to gain custody of her own children's children and with tragic consequences.

What it really boils down to, though, is our ancestors, all of them, were survivors, and it's that we need to take courage from.

The best piece of advice given to me ever was, "Do you have a choice?" Mind you, that was a response to me about a situation in which I very well could have landed in jail, unless I got my sh^t together. Iow, no, we don't have a choice. We either survive---or we curl up in a ball and flail at imaginary demons instead of the very real ones standing right in front of us.

        indubitably

but it is a real story, full of humanity.

There is real comfort in taking  courage from those who came before us.

Writing that reminded me of the last thing my other grandmother ever said to me, which is that she wouldn't change places with me for anything, that as tough and awful as things had been for her, it was much worse for us. I was pretty young when she said that, and I didn't understand what she meant. I do now.
