  •  Ballot Measure South Dakota (6+ / 0-)

The South Dakota Democratic Party is attempting to place a minimum wage increase on the ballot for 2014. If they succeed it may provide a small boost to their state legislature candidates and if they are lucky they might win a non-safe seat  or two.

Some center-right people and some downscale conservatives support the minimum wage and raising it, that's why it always polls well, and these people just go ahead and vote Republican anyway because they still agree with the GOP on far more things than the Democrats.

Give them a direct vote on hiking the minimum wage on election day, and they'll just see it as the best of both worlds, having their cake and eating it, too, by voting for the hike and for GOP candidates.

I like the minimum wage hike vote for its own sake, it's good policy and this sounds like a way to bypass the GOP-led state government.

But we won't benefit across ballot.

Demographically they are solidly Democratic (perhaps not as much so in lilly-white SD) and consist heavily of disaffected groups who do not traditionally turn out well in midterms. A minimum wage proposition should be on the ballot in 2014 in every state where citizen initiatives are available. At least in Florida, Michigan, and Ohio, for heavens sake. But missing the obvious opportunities is seemingly the cornerstone of any state Democratic party these days.
