    "and keep the peace"

Using violence and the threat of violence. That's the point. They are the section of society that is empowered to use violence against people and threaten violence against people to enforce policy. That's their purpose. The fire department also protects the public, they aren't authorized to use violence.

The police are the group in our society that are authorized to use violence. That's their purpose.

The purpose of your account here is to talk to different people. Not just to yell at me. At least I assume it is. You seem too reasonable to make an account just to yell at someone you don't know.

If debt were a moral issue then, lacking morals, corporations could never be in debt.

guns except for special units, however it is much more difficult for the population to obtain guns there.

we are and always have had a "gun culture" in america that makes weapons so easy to obtain, both legally and illegally" - and the mentality of some in this nation shows a flagrant disregard for others.

i wouldn't want to see an unarmed police force in america because there will NEVER be less guns on the streets.

what i wold like to see is better training for the police force - one that returns to "serving" the communities where they work.

east palo alto is a great example.  we have multiple guns fired on a daily basis - yet the police work to bring young people out of gangs and into society.  the confrontation mentality doesn't exist here - the cooperation one does - and it works (to a degree).

can the police "solve" the violence problem in america?  no - only the government and communities can by working together building better schools, job opportunities, jobs themselves - working to eliminate the poverty that is at the root cause.
