  •  The irony about Somali "terrorism"... (13+ / 0-)

...in recent news surrounding the U.S. surveillance state...per my comment in this community on 7/11/13...

The domestic "war on terror" is a travesty... (52+ / 0-)

...and the hypocrisy and irony is beyond the pale, per a comment I made elsewhere at DKos over the past 24 hours:

Our government turns its back when HSBC, Standard Chartered and Wachovia (now Wells Fargo), launder close to $1.5 trillion for South American drug cartels, al Qaeda, Hezbollah, and international criminal gangs. But, when that starts getting press coverage the government steps in and fines those firms the equivalent of a few weeks worth of profits. (i.e.: HSBC received penalties of under $2 billion for laundering $800 million; their net income was over $13 billion in 2012; and, over $16 billion in 2011. Furthermore, they may then DEDUCT those penalties from their corporate tax bills, to boot!)

But, when some poor Somali schmuck driving a cab in San Diego raises $23,000 for his former home nation's al Shabab organization, he's put front and center as the NSA's poster child for our country's DOMESTIC war on terror...and then he spends a good portion (if not all) of the remainder of his life in a U.S. prison cell.

As for those exec's at HSBC, Standard Chartered, and Wachovia/Wells Fargo, they're all getting raises! (Gotta' keep up with those increases in their country club dues, ya' know!)
