    Our society doesn't view the name-calling/being called out of your name thing in the same light as the Asian cultures do (at least as far as I can figure out from the reactions of one of the professors in my department who happens to be Chinese).  The two situations are different categories and shouldn't be compared.  Actually, our society used to have a more closely aligned view of the name calling issue as evidenced by the "smile when you say that" and "them's fightin' words" attitudes of our not that far back past.  I really hate to think this - but I do.  I think that our society has gotten so accustomed to name calling that we've demoted it - like a crime going from a felony to a seldom-enforced no-fine misdemeanor.
