    In many places, it matters who started the altercation. And in many places, if you have an opportunity to "retreat" -- to get the H out of there when you feel you are in danger -- you have an obligation to do so. Zimmerman had a car to get into and drive away before anyone threw the first punch; the 911 operator told him to stay in his car (presumably with the windows up and the doors locked) and wait for police. He did not do either of those things. In many places, that would matter a lot.

      If you are someplace you are legally entitled to be, doing things you are legally entitled to do, the obligation to retreat doesn't come into play until the deadly threat is apparent.  And then, of course, you have to be able to retreat without getting yourself killed.
