    People who fancy themselves well-informed and unburdened by delusions of inherent value or cosmic justice are going to affect this kind of fatalistic cynicism, where life is unfair and everyone's a jerk only out for themselves, and the only thing you can do about it is take a stiff drink and beat them at their own game.

    Alternately, you end up with a quasi-religious asceticism: people who forsake even seemingly legitimate needs and wants because of what they believe are evils involved in their pursuit and fulfillment.  There are some practitioners of Jainism that starve themselves to death because in their system of ethics, it's impossible to exist in this universe without causing others to suffer for one's own sake.
