The Republicans understand empathy. It's sympathy they have a problem with. Anytime you see a Republican adopting a stereotypical liberal or progressive point of view on a given topic, know that that particular issue has effected them or their family personally. Gay marriage? If they're for it, it's because they have a gay kid, right Mr. Cheney and Mr. Portman? Anti-torture, a debate we had endlessly during the maladministration of Obama's predecessor? There's John McCain. Stem cell research? Ask Nancy Reagan, whose husband suffered from Alzheimer's and Alzheimer's is an affliction for which stem cell research has shown promise.

What they haven't got is sympathy. They despise the poor, because they don't know any poor people. Their whole family is rich, therefore food stamp recipients are beneath contempt. Don't know any coal miners, so no need to have adequate mine safety. Don't know any serving military members, so the military option is always the first solution to any perceived foreign policy challenge. The list is literally endless. Our team gets it. We don't have to suffer to care about those who are suffering. Their side has to go through a Job-like series of trials and tribulations before they even acknowledge the existence of real suffering in others.
