    he would have had to prove that Zimmerman assaulted him (his own statement to that effect wouldn't have been enough).  

    Even taking race out of it, what we have here are Wild West type laws.  Think of those movies where the killer is always goading people he wants to shoot, to try to get them to stand up for themselves, so he can claim it was a "fair fight" when he shoots them dead.  As long as both guys are armed, and there's a direct confrontation, the winner is "the fastest gun in the West".  And it's all nice and legal.

    Add race into it, and if you're a minority, you'd better never be the one who initiates the confrontation.  There's no such thing there as a "fair fight" for you.  Throwing a punch is a capital offense.  And if you do shoot first, you damned well better have witnesses or evidence that the other guy went for his gun.
