Let's count the progressives in the U.S. Senate:

    Elizabeth Warren
    Tom Udall
    Jeff Merkley
    Sheldon Whitehouse
    Ron Wyden
    Richard Blumenthal
    Sherrod Brown
    Mazie Hirono
    Brian Schatz
    Christopher Murphy
    and now Ed Markey

Good team.  Anyone else I'm missing on the Democratic side in the U.S. Senate?

    •  I would say you're missing a number. (0+ / 0-)

      Kirsten Gillibrand
      Barbara Mikulski
      Jeanne Shaheen
      Barbara Boxer

    •  Mark Begich? (0+ / 0-)

Depending on what issues you prioritize. Great on civil rights and civil liberties, as well as Social Security, but bad on gun control.

Republicans are far more socialist than Democrats. Just because they want to redistribute the wealth upwards does not make it any better.

But gun control really should be something common sense.  I'd say Mark Begich is a moderate liberal at best but certainly not progressive.  And the gun control issue is the reason why.  For an issue as important as this where people continued to get killed in the most senseless way, there is just no justification for why voting against gun control should make sense.  I don't care what constituency Begich has.

Overtime though, Begich may change his mind on gun control.  He's liberal on quite a number of issues and I'm really proud that he's fighting for Social Security.  For that issue and civil liberties, he certainly has been a more effective U.S. Senator for Alaska than the late Ted Stevens, who to be frank was Mr. Pork.

For now, I don't think Begich should be considered progressive but he's certainly a good liberal Democrat otherwise.  I think in order to be considered progressive, you also have to think in reality as well.

    •  Martin Heinrich and Tammy Baldwin (0+ / 0-)

Were both candidates DK endorsed. They haven't been in office long though so I'm not 100% sure about their voting records, but from the votes I've seen they've always been on the side of progressives.

      •  Oh god. I forgot about them! (0+ / 0-)

Boy, hard to keep track sometimes with what's going on.  We're getting better Democrats in the U.S. Senate now than before.

And Martin Heinrich.  Wow.  He has NOT been in the news at all nor even talked much on Kos.  What's he been doing lately?
