I think that race and class have played a big part in perpetuating this. If it is now impacting white middle class kids then that needs open discussion because that in not part of the media narrative.

My impression is that black kids are more likely to get the full force of the police system. However, things are happening with the educational system and with employment that slowly put the squeeze on everybody. The system works by playing people off against each other.

Black people are still the most vulnerable.   Bullies always pick on the most defenseless.   But the results of this war are impacting all walks of life - except if your rich and simply buy your way out.    With daddy's millions, they don't need a job anyway.

is what would get people to wake up enough to see across the barriers of race and class.

I have very little faith in my fellow man.   People are flawed.  How the hell we survived or deserve to survive is beyond me.

Most people in the middle class community keep their heads down.  They may have more money, but they also have more debt and higher expectations.   I think there is also stigma attached.   "My son/daughter the felon" is not something they share around the water cooler.   Like the companies, we throw back to when most criminals were bad people who did really bad things.   Maybe if it came out of the closet who all these "crooks" are your kids, it might change something.  But there are also a lot of jerks around who simply don't care about what happens as long as it doesn't happen to them.  The old "you asked for it"  attitude.

      •  If you are rich (0+ / 0-)

You send your children to a private school that doesn't have this kind of draconian system.
