My dad was in the Air Force and I grew up in the Air Force.... My dad was taught personally that people of color are just as good/capable as any white person.  Due to the way the military works/ed dad was assigned to a unit where he was required to report to a person of color.  He didn't much appreciate it at the time as he grew up in a racist family.  The 'senior' sergeant taught dad several lessons that served him through out his life and dad has never forgotten those lessons.  This was during the 1960's.

Because of the lessons dad learned, they were passed on to my sister and I.  While I was growing up, it was 'normal' for there to be families of color in the neighborhood.  Where I live now, there's not many of color in the State as a whole.  Within the last 6-8 years (I've lived in my house for 13 years), the first people of color started moving in.  Both families on the street are from India.  The lady across the street is a great cook!!  And they really like the cookies I bring over at Christmas.  What is interesting is that even though the family is not Christian, Hindu, they have taken up some of the celebrations/customes of Christmas.  She thought it was a nice thing to put up a tree and lights to help brighten up the long dark days of winter.
