  •  And why should the rest of the world (1+ / 0-)

worry about that?  This is what I mean about capacity for self-reflection.  What he has leaked so far has been leaked to the press for the public good.  Why would the rest of the world not give him the benefit of the doubt with regards to his intentions?  They don't owe the American NSA any loyalty.

So think how all this looks to them.  Does it look any different than when the Soviets went nutso trying to get back their defectors.  Their "traitors," that is, under their laws.  The rest of the world gladly flipped the Soviets the bird.  It made them look like monsters.  I bet they had similar discussions at the time about what kinds of secrets Bukovsky might still reveal that would hurt Soviet national security.

And Andrei Sakharov...  shit man.  Sakharov was one of the key man behind the building of the Soviet nuclear program.  They certainly had much better reasons to want to keep HIM there than we do to want Snowden here.  Did the rest of the world give the Soviets some slack over that?  Hell no.  The EU has an annual Sakharov Award for human rights now.

One country's traitor is another country's human rights hero.

    •  Sakharov was never a defector. I'm not sure (0+ / 0-)

he even wanted to defect and even if he did was certainly not given a chance to do so.
I agree that the rest of the world doesn't care about what Snowden can reveal. It's not their problem. That said, any country would try to get a guy like him back. Some US efforts to do so like the business with the Morales' plane plane hurt US reputation. But other than that weird business the American desire to have Snowden back is largely perceived as routine.

      •  Yes, as the Soviet desire to get all (0+ / 0-)

their defectors back was seen as routine, and also as proof that they were gigantic assholes.

But I disagree that the rest of the world doesn't care about Snowden's leaks.  Read some of the world press's articles about it.  This affects them, too, obviously.  Last night, the big buzz was about how some dick senator in the United States said the US might boycott the Winter Olympics (the biggest sporting event in the WORLD) because they want to punish some whistleblower guy.  Try to imagine how that looks to people in other countries who don't normally give a shit about such things.

        •  Not the leaks but US efforts to get him back. They (1+ / 0-)

          do care about the leaks.

Yeah, some Russian pro-government journalists were sniping that if US tries to boycott Olympics it will backfire big time. And they were probably right.
