  •  Why Walmart? (7+ / 0-)

I know situations vary according to region but why would anybody work for Walmart?  In Massachusetts there are help wanted signs in the door everywhere I go. Could working at convenience stores or a supermarket be any worse. Actually I know people who work at entry level jobs who are quite happy with their employers. Students in my ESL classes, when asked to write about their work, more often than not declare that they love their job. None of them work for Walmart, who probably wouldn't hire those "aliens" anyway.

Some service industry employers do take advantage of their workers but at least some don't. Find a good one.  Keep looking.  Put Walmart at the very bottom of the places you apply to.  I contacted the human resources office of a discount clothing store on behalf of one of my students who was worried about her level of English skills. The person told me to encourage her to come in and apply because she also hired bi-lingual employees who can help the others to adjust.  Good employers are out there. Nobody needs Walmart!

nonprofit I'm involved with has one - we've received over 30 applications for a part time barely above minimum wage position.  And we're in a tiny town.  What's more, none of the 30 will be hired because none of them seem ready to just step in and do the job without training.

Then again, after the new personnel committee members, who have never hired before, discover that you can interview a thousand people and none of them are likely to be able to do the job with no training, particularly at a low wage level, they might end up going back and hiring one of them after all.  But only one.
