As a middle-aged woman I am so sick of the narcissistic hero fantasies of white men--McVeigh, Koresh, Kokesh, G. W. Bush, Cheney, Nugent, Zimmerman, Cucinelli,  (Snowden too!), et al. et al. et al.
They may have an overwhelming personal need to be heroes but mostly they just create mayhem, misery, and death in their quest to be the "protectors" of the rest of us. They decide what and whom the rest of us need to be "protected" from.
    I'm totally sick of it.

But I don't even think it's an idea of "protection."  I think it's profound fear and paranoia.  They see enemies wherever they look.  They see the world as an evil place and they have to be more evil to combat it.

They create the realities that exist in their heads, and we have to pay for the violence that ensues.

Just because the government keeps a record of real property transfers, it doesn't mean that the government wants to confiscate your home.

I can't help thinking, however, that they justify their fears and paranoia by telling themselves they do it to protect the members of society they consider weaker than themselves.
I taught in a tough urban high school for years and I never needed--or wanted--anyone to "protect" me from the people with whom I worked hard to establish relationships.
I just don't know how we get that message across.
