I seem to recall that last spring they were for Paul, rather than the yuppie rich Romney?
Moreover, I get the apocryphal impression that Hancock County has a population of what my folks would call "absorbees" -- former urbanite liberals who've become a significant presence in places like Columbia County (NY), the Berkshires, etc.

They're not just in Columbia County and the Berkshires, but they're also pretty much the entire state of Vermont. But yeah, Hancock County does have some people like that, especially in the western part of the county and on the islands. These "absorbees" seem to like living in mountainous areas.

And yes, Washington County is Paulist country. I knew someone at my college who was from there, who is a strong Ron Paul fan. While Washington County is libertarian in some respects (but not with regard to gay marriage), it is also a very downscale county, whose residents probably don't like rich elitists (like Romney) much. One reason why Washington had only a very small swing toward Romney in 2012.
