  •  I was raised by right wing parents in (0+ / 0-)

Dennis Hastert's district.  Went to visit Indiana University in the mid 70s.  The whole thing felt all "peace and love" to me.  My parents hated  it; I loved it.

I think I would have become what I am anyway.  But it felt right and Bloomington made things easier.

My freshman year was election 76.  I was too young to vote but would have voted for Ford.  By 1980, I was a flaming liberal.  College is a transformative experience.

My niece, who aspires to be the first woman president (don't think she'll make it because I think we will have one long before she turns 35), lives in Mean Jean Schmidt's district (okay I know she is gone, but still) and her parents are christian right to the max.  She is considering Yale, Vanderbilt and Univ of Kentucky.  Would like her to move out of her comfort zone, although she is totally a true believer right now.

"The next time I tell you someone from Texas should not be president of the United States, please, pay attention." Molly Ivins
