  •  In comedy, timing is everything (0+ / 0-)

when a joke regarding something of a serious nature catches someone at the wrong time, I don't believe they should be laughed out the door.  The "harmless parade of light laughs" caught a bunch of people at the wrong time.  Why not try to be a little more sensitive?  And by sensitive I mean not berating someone as they leave.  How can you know for sure this person is a sock puppet or a zombie?

    •  and out of the 208 recs this diary got, (0+ / 0-)

only 4-5 people agree with you laughing the commenter out the door.  That makes you the minority.  Also, you advised people to "stay the fuck out" of snarky diaries.  That's not possible when snark is not implied in the headline.  That means time has already been spent reading bullshit before a reader even knows it's bullshit.

      •  there was a snark tag at the bottom. i get it. (0+ / 0-)

he doesn't like getting fooled and is not into laughing at getting fooled like a lot of us are.

and this blog isn't just about news and politics anymore either. there are lifestyle diaries for cat lovers, ex smokers, personal fundraisers, music, tv reviews, etc...

so the FP sticks to news, but the rest of the diaries don't necessarily.

and like i said. no one forced him to comment. no one forced him to voice his disdain.

so yeah, if you're just going to comment in an attempt to shame the folks that are having fun, it would be best not to comment at all, lest you appear like a jerk out to spoil the good time others are having cuz you didn't have a good time too.

        •  Well, (0+ / 0-)

You'll never see me make fun of someone who is leaving.  In the 8 years I've been reading this website I think this is my first meltdown so I do apologize for that.  Yes, our site is home to not only political diaries but lifestyle diaries as well.... diaries that contribute to the overall awesomeness of the site.  For some reason this diary struck a nerve with me.  It seems to have struck others this way as well.  More than usual would you say?

          •  no. more than usual would be HRs on the tip (0+ / 0-)

jar numbering a dozen or more and a lot fewer recs. that it had over 200 recs and and over 200 tips on the jar as well as the majority of the individual commenters were congratulating the diarist on well done snark, i would say the only thing unusual was the sour mood of a very small handful of commenters, many of them sour on any diary which contains criticism of the president, including snark..

and if it was someone who was known to the community even a little and had seemed invested in the community at all, the response to him would have been a lot different. people would probably likely be trying to talk him down, especially people who did not enjoy the diary as well.

as it is, it appears that someone who cared not to become part of the community is threatening with leaving cuz he didn't like a diary that had resounding support from the community at large.

that's like me going to a website i had registered at eons ago but have never really taken part in, go into a diary there that i didn't like and threaten to leave cuz i didn't like A diary at wherever. it would be laughable for me to do something like that. you can't assume a community that you've never really taken part in would care.

I don't associate with assholes who can't empathize.  Go fuck yourself.

              •  oh i can empathize. just not with people who (0+ / 0-)

try to insult the community without really investing in the community. we get all kinds of people here. sleeper trolls, red state forays, etc... i'm not going to empathize with someone who's sole purpose of going out of their way to comment was to denigrate the large portion of the community. how do i know he's not just some sleeper troll?

like i said, if he was someone who had clearly invested in the community even if i hadn't heard of them. but the record is there in his profile. we get people trying to start shit all the time in order to denigrate the community. generally done by people who don't invest themselves in the community.

so yeah, after seeing this happen umpteen million times over a very active 7 years of community membership, color me skeptical.

and no wonder you didn't enjoy the diary - you don't understand snark. snark is not a cover to throw heavy insults at someone. but oh well.

                •  still don't agree with you (0+ / 0-)

The commenter voiced his/her opinion on the way out.  That's more of like an exit survey rather than an all out assault on the community.  If you want to keep trying to justify your rudeness by minimizing this person then you certainly have the right to do so.  A very small handful of others will echo your laughter and you can all revel in your ignorance.  8 years.  That should speak something to you.  It shouldn't matter if someone doesn't have a rockstar posting history.

I've been a member of this community for as long as you, and I don't accept the "trust me I've seen it all" argument.  There are those that leave this site in far more vebally abusive ways than this commenter.  This is a very, very tough time for a lot of us.  Tensions are going to be running high.  It's important to understand that when measuring your response to people freaking out.

                  •  they have no posting history. roughly one comment (0+ / 0-)

a year. people that have been here one day have more mojo than he does. he has 13 comments. has tipped no one.

he doesn't participate in the community. he threatens to leave said community he doesn't participate in, he insults the diarist and the more than 200 people recd, and he expects us to feel bad for him that we're losing his non-participation? really?

btw - getting 200 recs is a big deal - look right to the rec list there and see how many accomplish that feat. better yet, visit jotter's nightly list of stats.

and i'll just stand by my 7 year very active history here as the example of what kind of person i am.

                    have a good day.

    •  i don't know that this person is a sock or zombie. (0+ / 0-)

      just that's it's suspicious.

and the sensitivity goes both ways. he came in to a well received diary, didn't like it and instead of just stepping back and thinking, "ok stupid, but it's not like it's on the FP" he immediately essentially insults the diarist and those enjoying it and threatens to take his toys and go home. his intent appeared to be to rain on the parade or point out how stupid he thinks we are.

he dished. he best be able to take. that goes both ways.

and in the ensuing convo, it was noticed that he's not really what could be termed an active member of the community anyways, so not even sure why he thought the threat would be effective.

he didn't have to comment. he didn't have to pooh pooh those of us having fun. he made his bed.
