  •  We had drills but one day we had a real tornado... (4+ / 0-)

approaching us from the north. It was teh first day of school and a half day and most the students had teachers had gone home. It was just some student volunteers for yearbook and cheerleaders decorating halls that were there. We hid in the wind tunnel that was also a bomb shelter. Luckily the tornado missed us... but it wasn't a false alarm. The tornado changed direction and destroyed a high school in Plainfield instead.

I remember that day because it was my first day coaching the high school soccer team down in Bradley-Bourbonnais, roughly an hour south of you.

I remember that the Plainfield football team missed being killed by seconds as they left the gym, which pancaked, and went into interior hallways.

The wind was blowing so hard where we were that the boys stood around on breaks acting like kites.
