and also stupidly thinking Obama meant the city of Detroit rather than the auto industry when he said we wouldn't let them go bankrupt.
There's sort of a parallel going on here.  Obama saved the 'industry' from economic collapse, but in a way that doesn't seem to have helped 'Motor City' much.

Likewise, the economic actions taken under the admin economic team have worked wonders for the 'economy', but in a way that the vast majority of that 'economy' has all gone to the top few percent, leaving the rest of the country to limp along on crumbs.

A lot of people might have assumed, without being 'stupid', that a decent plan to save the industry would have resulted in a revitalization of Detroit as well, in the same way they might not have been 'stupid' to assume that economic steps undertaken to 'fix the economy' would have helped the millions who still remain long term unemployed, or are now seriously underemployed.

Instead, we have unprecedented business profits, a record stock market, and continued misery and downsizing their lives for those who lost jobs, homes, prospects.

More than ever, we really are becoming 'Two Americas', with the middle class disappearing, and the rest of the country realigning into the wealthy and the poor, just as Detroit did.
