  •  An early lesson for a POC (9+ / 0-)

Is that your word means NOTHING when put up against a white.

Growing up, that happened to me time and time again... where all manner of reasons other than race were used to tell me why "Timmy says you lied, so you lied."

This continued into adulthood, where I've always known than in many a challenge, even if I have facts to show otherwise, the simple word of a white can undermine what I say.

If one says I lied, even if they admit I was truthful, a stain will be over me and it will be presumed I was covering up "something."

I tend to go out of my way to be truthful and honest - but it rarely gets me anywhere in their world.

Spooner made a snap judgement that the BLACK youth did it, and the young man could have said anything, shown any proof, and still be condemned... because his word would mean nothing to that person.

Spooner probably still think the young man took his stuff and just hid it well...

That comment of mine above might be a hard read for some - but its a lesson I did have to learn growing up. Trying to figure out why I was never trusted despite being honest.

Not everyone will judge me like that, but its common enough that in a group of people, the one who just give my view weight can usually be circled around by the others.

      •  It's uncomfortable only in the sense that it's an (4+ / 0-)

ugly reality.  But it's a reality that needs to continue to be reported until there's a much, much wider understanding of how common this kind of experience is for black people, especially black men.

These experiences need to be spoken and heard.

      •  Gods I wish that wasn't true (0+ / 0-)

Because it tells an ugly truth about how terribly far we have to go to reach the justice and equality for all that I crave for humanity. It's depressing.
