  •  I think the fact that Jeantal was the star witness (2+ / 0-)

shows the weakness of the case; she wasn't there.  I don't think any witness can be prepped well enough to make the testimony of someone in her position a compelling witness.

That said, the prosecution trying to use Zimmerman as a witness against himself by introducing his media interviews, even inconsistent ones, was NOT a good idea.

I'm not sure that they had much choice -- one by one, all of the prosecution witnesses, except Ms. Jeantel (who did not have to offer in terms of direct evidence) turned into defense witnesses.

They took a risk that they could turn him into such an obvious liar that the jury would hate him and agree that their inferences about what he could have done after he got off the phone with the NEN operator amounted to proof beyond a reasonable doubt.  That strategy went down the tubes when their own witness, Serino, testified that, from the perspective of investigating the case, his inconsistencies were expected and not significant and did not lessen his credibility.  All of that discussion (and the defense hounded on it) stayed in evidence.  The judge simply struck the last question and answer indicating that Serino personally believed him.

At that point, they clearly must have known that the "let's show all his statements and prove that he's a liar" strategy was in trouble, but I'm not sure what else they had.
