    A former co-worker of mine. As white as I am married an African American women in the 60s. He once told me over a few adult beverages that often he'll be walking down the street late at night and see a black person in a hoodie and cross to the other side of the street.

    I said I might not do that but I would be on guard.

    Clearly neither of us are racist.

    But alas this is how my mind is wired for whatever reason. I don't like it, maybe doesn't make any logical sense, but alas it is what it is.

    I will at least admit and talk about it.

    That is what got me about this case. Clearly race played an issue here and to sweep it under the rug and not talk about it, well that is just sad.

      city street in my daily commute;

      the only 'type' I now still take detours for,

      is the roving gangs of homeless (and/or raving shouters).

      those of color, and/or hoodies -- I can easily share the same sidewalk with,

      and occasionally even exchange the respectful nods.

      that is a small measure of progress on my part,
      but hey, I usually late for work.

      (usually because of my morning blogging efforts, lol)

    •  Many of us share those inclinations, but we (4+ / 0-)

      use them to question our preconceptions, not to confirm them.

      One reason we haven't talked about it, though, is because we've been hoping that newer generations would stop caring about race. To a great extent that's actually been happening.

      Regardless of the past, though, now is the time to call out racism everywhere, to tell bigots they're bigots, and to demand that they not be given a platform for their bullshit.

      The time has always been now, but our current now is all the now we'll ever have.
