    Yes, he was popular. He was smart. He unexpectedly did terrible things. The article doesn't make excuses. It tries to show how these facts go together. But maybe you think it would be better for people to think that all terrorists are wild-eyed and easily profiled? I suppose it's a simpler worldview, even if it's likelier to get you or several someone elses killed.
