  •  No argument there. (4+ / 0-)

And honestly, my comment wasn't meant as a slam against President Obama. On the other hand, I can't figure out why you'd take offense at the suggestion that Obama was influenced by Coates's column. It seems like a reasonable suggestion to me.

the left. If Obama does something they agree with, it must because someone smarter and more savvy than him (usually a white left pundit) told him to. There is a constant thread of disrespect and an assumption that Obama is an imbecile from the left that was never there under Clinton. Even when they disagreed with Clinton, his intelligence was never called into account.

      •  I don't often see the left slamming his intellect (3+ / 0-)

Maybe it's just me, but that's not what I read, especially here. I see people slamming his motivations and ideology, but not often his intellect.

The sole exception I can think of is when people complain that he's still, once again, ad nauseam, trying to negotiate across the aisle. And even there, it's not his general intellectual capacity that I see criticized; it's more of an accusation of naivete.

        Just my $.02.

      •  I hear you and many times I would agree. (2+ / 0-)

In this case, however, you need to read the column.

      •  TNC is not a white left pundit (4+ / 0-)

I don't always agree with the President, but I am quite sure he is smarter than I am (and I am not very humble on that front) and self-evidently capable of eloquent speech long before he had speechwriters. But regardless of his intellectual chops and writing and speaking ability, I rather hope he does get a sampling of what the best writers on topical subjects have to say in his daily or at least weekly updates. Ta-Nehisi Coates is one of those writers.

But read the column. The fact that Obama might have read it reflects badly on neither Obama not Coates. I was not offended by that tweet. And it is perfectly reasonable; no doubt the President reads the NYT from time to time.
