  •  I actually prefer Snyder to that guy... (0+ / 0-)

Non-Michiganders really don't get how much you are compromised if you are pro-Matty Moroun. This guy was pro-Matty Moroun. Kwame was pro-Moroun. I don't remember who I voted for for Governor that year, but it sure as hell wasn't that fake Democrat from Lansing who supported Moroun. I don't remember his name. I don't want to remember his name. His sudden conversion (the day after the primary, IIRC) was too little, too late. Frankly I hope the people of Lansing dump him so we don't ever have to put up with him again.

As for why Michigan lets this happen it's simple: not letting it happen would cost $18 Billion and the state's budget is only $50 Billion. Increasing taxes 40% to help 7% avoid gutting the pensions of like 0.02% is not slam-dunk public policy. And all preventing bankruptcy would do in practical terms is allow the City to keep making pension payments to 20k or so retirees and our bondholders.

Actual bankruptcy is probably better for Detroit then a bail-out of $18 Billion. $18 Billion means our budget is balanced, but our current budget has inadequete police protection, unsafe fire protection, nobody to approve business permits, etc. With bankruptcy we can potentially wipe out this $18 Billion, plus a lot more billions, which would allow us to hire actual cops. It's not right to our former city employees, but then even a bailed-out Detroit would be screwing current residents out of the police protection they deserve...

I agree there's more then a little racial BS going on here. Oakland County, in particular, is very well-known for insisting any black pol from Detroit is necessarily racist, while vetoing all attempts at regional co-operation unless said attempts are 100% guaranteed to result in Detroiters moving to Oakland County.

OTOH, it is 2013. The state as a whole went for Obama twice, once preferring him to a native son. Oakland County went for him twice, too, and Romney is actually from Oakland.
