When I was a boy growing up in The Raiders training camp town (Santa Rosa, CA), we used to see Blanda and other team members around town where they were generally appreciated but not bothered by the locals.  As sly kids we we would sneak unnoticed into the training field at The El Rancho Tropicana Hotel.

In those days, the NFL had home game TV blackouts (even for sellouts), though we sometimes saw the games on cable from a Chico TV station outside the blackout range. We invited Raider friends and family from the East Bay and SF to watch with us.  Even so, some games were still only broadcast on radio. In 1970 we would sit around the house listening to Mr. Blanda kick those exciting last minute field goals.  That was almost as exciting as my first live Raider game, later know as the legendary "Heidi Game" vs. Joe Willie Namath & the NY Jets.
