General Michael Hayden, who was head of the NSA when I worked there, and then director of the CIA, said, "We need to own the net." And that is what they're implementing here. They have this extraordinary system: in effect, a 24/7 panopticon on a vast scale that it is gazing at you with an all-seeing eye.

Others have simply gotten old. I prefer to think I've been tempered by time.

    •  Your quote is from Thomas Drake's MUST-READ (9+ / 0-)

      op-ed in the Guardian --

Drake understood that the NSA, under Hayden's management, was subverting the Constitution.  He went through 'official channels' as a whistleblower; the valuable evidence he gave to government investigators was expunged from the record.  After years of living with this conflict, Drake spoke to a reporter.  Although he disclosed no classified information, he was still persecuted and his livelihood has been destroyed.  He now works in a retail Apple store and continues to speak out about the lawless NSA surveillance state.
