I live in rural Kentucky and have the same problem. A mile and a half down the road a neighbor is flying the stars and bars and Gadsden flag (he recently added an 'America for Americans' flag). Near as I can tell, not thing one can be done, it's in his yard, freedom of expression and such. The best I have managed is to make sure he leaves me the hell alone. His kids have been banned from the county (theft and vandalism) his house burned down and he spent a year living in his barn waiting for an insurance check. Best you can hope for is karma. As for my neighbor, he lives in an area colonized by retired soldiers (one of whom is african american) who think he's a jackass. He starts a brawl, he won't survive, he knows it.

    •  I guess what made me have such a strong (4+ / 0-)

Reaction is that I DON'T live in a part of the country where this is commonplace.  But, given how rare this type of thing is, it seems wrong to leave it alone to fester, or spread.

I mean really, do you not think the majority of people look at this moron and think the same thoughts you do?

Let his ignorance speak for itself...and thank your stars that you are blessed with far more decency and common sense. That accomplishes far more than trying to block or censor his viewpoints...regardless of how distasteful they may be.

Adequate health care should be a LEGAL RIGHT in the U.S without begging or bankruptcy. Until it is, we should not dare call our society civilized.

        •  It's just, given the amount of outrage (2+ / 0-)

Around the country this week, after the conviction of Trayvon for being black and carrying candy, and the outrageous backlash form the right wingers accusing Obama of trying to start a race war when he related his personal experiences, that this peckerhead was feeling like its ok to publicly be a racist.  So it was a deliberate provocation.
But I can't help thinking how ashamed I was listening to black men relate their experiences, that no one ever seems to standup to these injustices as they are happening.  I don't want to be one of those people.

No outspoken blithering idiots in my immediate neighborhood.  There is sort of an unspoken agreement that nobody here puts up politically-divisive signs, so I don't know the politics or prejudices of anyone in my neighborhood.  Even during the last election, not one sign and no neighbors with political bumper stickers.  It was very refreshing.  Personally, I will refrain from displaying any political signs or symbols, provided all of the neighbors do the same.

I drive through other neighborhoods and occasionally see the Gadsden or other right-wing bullshit amongst a group of homes with nothing and I feel for the neighbors...what it must be like to live next to some moron shoving his ignorance out there for everyone to behold.  Yuck.

      •  My neighbor with the flags... (0+ / 0-)

He had (and is rebuilding) a very nice log home. He has a pond (he built) and a nice place. He's not poor, he's just a nasty biggot. He ran for local office once, got 20 votes...I can't believe he has 20 friends...they're not all poor and living in trailers.
